Heart Healthy Diet Tips For Successful Weight Loss

healthy diet tips

Discover the best healthy diet tips from hundreds of clients who have successfully lost weight and kept it off.
They say that having a positive attitude, being consistent, planning meals and setting realistic weight loss goals helped them succeed.
But most importantly, they asked themselves 7 questions, recorded their answers and made a personal COMMITMENT to themselves. This initial step prepares them for their journey and reminds them why it is so important to succeed.

Ask yourself the same 7 questions, and rank their importance on a scale of 1-10:

  • How important is it for you to be healthier ?
  • How important is it for you to lose weight?
  • How important is it for you to have more energy?
  • How important is it for you to look younger?
  • How important is it for you to be happy?
  • How important is it for you to have healthier relationships?
  • Now ask yourself:

where you will be in 5 years if you do not lose weight and Change your lifestyle??

Unfortunately, when I have asked clients this last question some of them have answered that they see themselves 'dead' in five years. How sad is that? Healthy diets tip #1 is to make a commitment to yourself to do whatever you need to do to achieve your goals. You can do it! Clients that are successful at losing weight offer the following additional healthy diet tips:

  • Set realistic goals

  • Use the BMI index to help you find a healthy weight. The goal is not to be ‘skinny’ but to feel healthy in your own skin.

If you have 100 lbs or 20 lbs to lose, divide your weight loss goal in half and find a way to celebrate the achievement of your half way mark.

Visualize yourself at your half way mark and at your final goal. Use a vision board as a tool to help you to succeed. Have you watched the movie 'The Secret' or read the book called 'The Secret'?....this will definitely inspire you and help you goal set.

  • Put yourself first
  • Only you can do this weight loss journey, nobody can do it for you. Sometimes we have to focus more time and energy on ourselves, and surprisingly others respect us more when we do this.

My experience has been that women, in particular, are ‘givers’. We give to our children, husbands, work, home, friends and family. We are often left tired and depleted and yes…overweight.

So healthy diet tips #2 is to LOOK AFTER YOURSELF.

  • Take each meal and do the best you can
  • healthy diet tips meal

Sometimes we ‘screw’ up a meal or eat something we shouldn’t and tell ourselves 'the day is shot… I might as well eat what I like and start fresh tomorrow'. This is typical 'diet thinking' and gets us on the diet roller coaster mentality.

You have to love the healthy food you are eating and feel so good that the old habits don’t creep back again.
I could not have lost my own weight if I didn’t love the food I was eating.

Eventually you do create new habits. Yes we all screw up our food choices occasionally but those times become less and less frequent as we feel good, look good and as we create new habits.

So healthy diet tips #3 is to take each meal and do the best you can, if you make poor choices at one meal don’t throw in the towel and beat yourself up just do better the next meal. You will get there!

  • Get family support
  • healthy diet tips family support Successful weight loss clients have got support from family members. Often in coachings, clients will confide that their husband or sister eats junk food in front of them or they encourage them to eat the wrong foods. This is called SABOTAGE and will eventually derail you on your weight loss journey.

It is most important that you have a ‘heart to heart’ conversation with that family member and let them know how important it is to you to lose weight and get healthy. Invite them to join you and review the benefits of doing it together. Yes…there is strength in numbers!

If they choose not to join you, respect their decision and then tell them how you feel when they bring the wrong food into the house or eat it in front of you.

Healthy diet tips #4 is to get your family to support you. If they love you, they will understand and want to help you succeed.

  • Learn about Nutrition
  • healthy diet tips learn about nutrition

Successful weight loss clients learn the facts about healthy nutrition. There is a lot of wrong food information out there which leads to confusion and weight gain!

For example, cereal manufacturers will try and convince you to eat high carbohydrate cereal every morning . Manufacturers of low fat products will forget to tell you how much sugar they've added to replace the fat. Diet pop and diet product manufacturers conveniently forget to tell you that artificial sweeteners make you crave simple carbohydrates which contributes to your weight!

The eating guidelines as promoted by our recommended food pyramid are defective, primarily because of the overwhelming emphasis on grains. Excess grains and 'starchy carbs' are responsible for the current epidemic of obesity, heart disease and diabetes type2.

Nutrition misinformation also comes from food advertising. Advertising campaigns are slick and they disguise their ads with manipulated nutrition information in order to get you to buy their products.

In order to take responsibility for your own health, become knowledgeable about health and nutrition. Become a savvy label reading consumer. Visit your local health food store, buy some good nutrition books -'Prescription for Nutritional healing' by Phyllis Balch is a good choice. I've selected a few favorites for you to check out:

Think about visiting a qualified Naturopathic doctor as well as your medical doctor. Most doctors don't know enough about nutrition because nutrition and healthy eating is not a priority at medical school. Whereas, your Naturopathic doctor has been fully educated in nutrition.

So healthy diet tips #5 is to question what you hear and read about food and find reliable sources of information. Learn the right facts about nutrition: knowledge is power.

  • Accountability
  • healthy diet tips you can do it

Most of my clients have been on the 'diet-merry-go -round' throughout their lifetime. When I ask them to identify why they have been successful this time, they often say because of the coaching and accountability.

You see...clients are required to come in for coaching three times a week and if they don't show up...we call them 3 times a day!

We also work with them to lose approximately 2lbs a week so there is a weight loss expectation. We help our clients with menus, meal planning, goal setting, problem solving, and provide tons of encouragement to help them succeed. We see ourselves as their personal cheerleaders and celebrate their success every step of the way.

Now when you are doing this journey on your own, you need to find your own health coach/ cheerleader who will hold you accountable and motivate you when the going gets rough. This may be your husband or wife, a weight loss group, best friend or you may consider hiring your own health coach.

Healthy diet tips #6 is to make yourself accountable. Being accountable to someone, group or organisation will help you achieve the success you so desire.

I am sure you have your own healthy diet tips to share or perhaps you have a question or comment, I'd love to hear from you!
